Fools on Ice Women's Hockey Tournament
The Fools on Ice Women’s Hockey Tournament is an offspring of the Alaska State Women’s Hockey Tournament. The State Women’s Hockey Tournament began in 1996 and has been held in Kenai, Fairbanks, and Anchorage. In 2005 the tournament was renamed to Fools on Ice because the tournament dates fell on the April Fools’ Day weekend.
The purpose of the Fools on Ice Women’s Hockey Tournament is to have fun and promote hockey for women of all ages. The minimum age to play in the tournament is 21. There are multiple divisions within the tournament so every level of play is welcome. The participants come from a wide background: some women began playing as a result of their children being involved in hockey, some women have played since they were children. Each year women’s hockey grows all over the state.
Since the Fools on Ice tournament began, the communities of Juneau, Homer, Palmer, and Kodiak have built hockey rinks and formed women’s teams. The tournament has hosted teams from Anchorage, Wasilla, Palmer, Fairbanks, Healy, Homer, Kenai, Juneau, Kodiak, and Los Angeles.
The 2012 Fools on Ice Women’s Hockey Tournament will be held March 30, 31 and April 1 at the Subway Sports Centre in Anchorage, AK. We provide cold drinks in the locker room after every game. Most importantly, we have quite a party Saturday night at the Blueline pub where DJ Encyclopedia Brown keeps us dancing until the wee hours. Hope to see you there!
